# Collect Fees

Use fee collection when a parent or student pays against an assigned fee.

## Step-by-step guide

1. Go to **Fees & Finance > Fee Payments**.
2. Select **Collect Payment**.
3. Search by student name, admission number, class, or fee.
4. Choose the fee assignment with remaining balance.
5. Select **Continue**.
6. Enter payment amount.
7. Choose payment date.
8. Choose payment mode: Cash, Card, Bank Transfer, UPI, Cheque, or Online.
9. Add remarks if needed.
10. Confirm payment.
11. Download receipt from the payments list if needed.

## What SmartAcademy does in the background

The backend locks the assignment during collection, prevents overpayment, creates a fee transaction, generates a receipt number, updates paid and due amounts, updates assignment status, and records the collection action.

## Tips

- Use remarks for cheque numbers, UPI references, or special notes.
- Do not collect more than the remaining balance; SmartAcademy blocks overpayments.
